Rudder Assembly

[Nov. 9, 2004]
rudder_assembly_image The rudder assembly actually starts with the foot pedals. The first thing to go in is the slide.

Everything seems to be sturdy enough, but only time and good hard use will tell. The next thing is to take everything out, make cable mounts on the pedals and paint them.

With this design the rudder blade is easily replaced and to allow for experimentation.

Now tubing is put inside the hull to route the rudder cables through. But how to do that?? Using 2 extentions on a drill I was able to drill the holes in the frames. In image (1) you see one tube already strung through the deck and a wire inserted into the a hole. (2) A clothes pin is attached to a stick and a string is run through a hole in the clothes pin and stick. (3) A wooded plug is inserted into the tubing and a wire is run through the plug. (4) Ah ha! Now we see that the clothes pin on the stick can be used to string the wire along through the holes in the frames. The string is not seen here, but it opens the clothes pin. Once the wire is strung through we can see what image (3) is all about!

Here is another view of this remarkable/funky tool:
